We’re less than a month from the annual Independence Day celebration, featuring parades, picnics and, of course, the spectacular fireworks show put on every year since 1963 by the one and only Joe Marino, better known as “Mr. Fourth of July.”
At 91, this veteran showman already has a statue of himself downtown, in which he’s portrayed carrying an armload of fireworks and wearing Christmas lights around his neck — Joe does Festival of Lights at Christmastime, too.
Joe has a slight problem, though, as he explained to me:
“We’re short about $6,500 in our collection and we’re getting kind of concerned. At 91, I don’t want to come up short for the fireworks,” he said.
